I've been using Memorex DVD+R DL discs for about a year and haven't had any major problems until recently when the discs did most of the time fail before a successful burn completes. I've tried speeds from 2.4X to 6X with pretty much the same result. I've read other reviews here that suggest the manufacturing process for these drives has changed recently, making them more prone to different results on different drives. I have two Toshiba satellites with DVD drives that are only a year or two old. One burned down successfully; the other not. Drivers for both are up to date. It's unstable and disappointing. After reading the reviews here, I found that users are the most satisfied with Verbatim, so I ordered a 2.4x speed DVD+R-DL from Verbatim (I thought a lower speed would be more successful), although Verbatim offers an 8x speed disc (which I haven't tried). The first time I tried a Verbatim 2.4X disc, it burned successfully. The process sounded much smoother. With Memorex discs I have occasionally heard that the disc is difficult to burn. I think the other reviewer here is right: the problem occurs when the drive tries to switch layers. Most of my write errors occurred towards the end of the process when the drive was attempting to write 5GB (4.4GB is the maximum for a single tier).
