Gauge good for night use only

I bought this watch because a lot of gauge manufacturers (even more expensive ones) don't have clocks to match in their range. My previous matching watch was from Autometer. The setting spring broke after a few years of use. While my Autometer gauges were well made and worked well, I had one complaint about them that really annoyed me. The Autometers (Black Z-Series) are easily visible in daylight, but are relatively difficult to see at night due to the indirect lighting they use. I decided to replace them with the GlowShift range mainly because they were advertised as a bright face light for use in low light conditions. Installation was pretty easy, especially if you already have cables for other sensors. When I first rode them at night, I was amazed at how clearly the faces and hands could be seen at night. Then the bad news. When I rode them in daylight, the dial was still visible, but the hands seemed to have disappeared. I can't see what time it is during the day, even if my face is six inches from the front of the sensor. The backlight on the temples is definitely not bright enough. To make matters worse, the transparent dial has a highly reflective convex surface, causing daylight reflections to further darken the dial. It's important to add that I have them in the dashboard (Subaru WRX) partially blocking the faces from bright sunlight. So if you only drive at night - a good choice, if you drive at all during the day (even on cloudy days) - not so good.

Pros
  • Great for a small house
Cons
  • Lots of stuff
