This is trouble!

I really wanted to like this item. So I turned it on and set it to the default temperature of 550ยฐF (soldering 60/40). This indicated that he was gaining temperature very rapidly and fixed on that temperature like a rock. Not even some overshoot. Pretty impressive! My first job was to solder the wire to the toggle switch and I couldn't do it. The solder barely melted, let alone flow. So the thermocouple comes out. It's really tiny and I wrapped the wire 1/4 inch from the top 3 times. The idle temp was 546ยฐF - very close to the 550.482ยฐ setting and stayed there. While all of this was happening, the display insisted that the peak was 550ยฐ and not dithering a degree. Nowhere safe. Thermocouple and display weren't even close. It took about twice as long to reach the temperature as the display indicated. In summary, the thing just doesn't work and the tip temp gauge is a big lie... It's complete rubbish. By the way, electronics has been my job for over 50 years and I have used soldering irons from very good to pretty bad. This thing gets the TOP ERROR PRIZE!
