Yes it does melt the wax. I think for the money it's better to at least do it. I like the detachable pot for those who have wax jars that go straight into the melting pot. You can then keep the two different waxes separate if you are one of those people who make both hard and soft wax. I understand that some wax jars are intentionally larger, so you'll have to buy the company's melting pot. So be careful before you buy this + any other wax jar. It's easy to clean up if you spill something between the pot and the inner pot, although it's almost impossible.
