This is the shorter of the two tri-band antennas available for the BTech UV-5x3. In fact, this is the same design as the Nagoya NA/320A but half the length (and accordingly half the length of the Nagoya). 5x3 is much easier to handle. Of course, a half-wave antenna will outperform a quarter-wave antenna, but the bottom line is that this is a compromise in favor of ease of use, and the difference in performance is functionally less important when you buy this antenna. The 17-inch (half-wave) antenna is a little clunky in the field, and what you lose in range with a quarter-wave antenna it makes up for in ease of use. It's still better than the rubber ducky that comes with the UV-5x3 and I find that if you're going to be using this radio outdoors rather than indoors then the trade-off is very much worth it.
