Well the motor started smoking as soon as I plugged it in and pressed the pedal. Also, a few small plastic flakes flew out from behind. Thinking the engine was only burning factory oil, I let it run for a few minutes. Soon it just stopped. The pedal has variable speed, but only at zero load. When the engine is under normal load, the speed control is simply switched on or off. Not recommended.
