These are two plates connected by nylon rollers. The so-called "damping effect" is the result of two plates sliding back and forth with little clearance. No vertical (top-to-bottom) damping or (side-to-side). As such, it is no different from traditional driver's seat shock absorbers that use steel springs to absorb vertical shocks to the hips and spine.
