Review on Vantec NexStar Drive Enclosure NST 328S3 BK by Matt Watson

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Nice case but the drive mount is now plastic

I've been using these Vantec SATA to USB cases for years, back then as IDE to USB :) I used the screws that came with it to attach the internal hard drive to the Bracket for the drive, insert the bracket into the case, secure with screws and it works right out of the box. The drive was immediately recognized by the PC and worked fine. Pros: * Includes screws, both metal (for mounting bracket to drive) and black screws (for attaching case to bracket). Thank you, one spare screw per color is included.* The LED cable, which was prone to tangling/breaking on previous models, is now neatly routed behind a piece of plastic on the bracket so it no longer interferes with retraction of the bracket is still metal and looks solid.* The bracket fitted the drive perfectly, the drive clicked into place and felt solid, and the 6 screw holes on the bottom were right where they should be. * Once plugged in and powered on, it worked with no issues. It recognizes my 6TB drive. That's about as fast as a classic USB stick. Traversing the USB plane will never be as fast or reliable as pure SATA, but unfortunately eSATA was not found on the market so these new enclosures no longer include eSATA as an available connection option. now plastic! Pooh. This is by far the worst feature. On older models this bracket was metal, as it should be, for good heat transfer and strength. I would happily pay another $10 to have them come back and make it metal again as it should be. It seems silly to lower its value here. * There are only 2 screw holes to fix the bracket to the case and it is not enough to prevent shaking. Earlier models had 4 screw holes. Again, this seems like an odd area for cost reduction. *Instructions were a bit contradictory, maybe just copied from previous models without update. The manual lists more screws than are actually needed to assemble the product and these extra screws are not included in any way. The manual also mentions small rubber feet to attach, but now the feet are factory installed and you don't have to do it yourself.

Pros
  • Possibility to mount your own hard drive. (Hard drive not included)
Cons
  • Definitely bad product
