I was very disappointed with the price of the Microsoft Surface Stylus. But when I tried to buy something non-brand, I found that the price was conditional. so far. Active stylus --------------- The product description says this is an active stylus. This means that while any plastic stylus leaves a mark, an active stylus has an electrical current that interacts directly with the screen. If you move the active pen while almost touching the screen, you will see the pointer move. This gives the active stylus significantly more precision and maneuverability. So I decided to buy it with fingers crossed! Amazing Detail ------------------ I was immediately amazed by the much finer and more precise marks this pen left on my screen. I usually use it for a whiteboard in remote meetings, so many people watch as I awkwardly write diagram labels, then erase and rewrite what's illegible while holding the Surface screen with my free hand to minimize movement . This pen was like drawing with a nice felt tip pen. My Loss --------- One of my kids does a lot of digital art so I figured they might enjoy it. It was the ultimate test. Half an hour later I ran out of my lovely new pen, replaced with an original Surface pen which was returned to me. Sigh. (Not too sad. Happy mom!) There are differences ------------------------ First, the tip that comes with the pen is thinner. So if you want crisp markings, you need to choose a thicker brush/pen in your application. Second, and I'm not sure if that's a good thing, you lose the eraser on the back of the pen. As I mentioned earlier, I often use this eraser to correct quick drawings while others are watching. The eraser on this pen is the second (bottom) button on the pen. It works well and my artist kid didn't seem to mind. Of course, I won't know if I'll get used to it until my new one is here! quality problems? ------------------ I see that some people have had issues with the quality of the stylus. Can't speak to customer service but mine arrived in perfect condition, with an AAAA battery attached and ready to use. I'm not too worried about Amazon customer service - put it in a bag and mail it to Mr. Bezos. He will take care of you. :)
