When reassembling all the paint came off

I was sooooooooo looking forward to this for our 4 year old son's birthday. The box itself arrived with one of the frame parts (pedals?) sticking out through a hole in the box, but the frame itself was salvageable, although the handlebar section was wedged into the frame quite tightly and it took some effort to disassemble. The bike/trailer (?) itself looked great (frame). At first I was disappointed to see that the two tone/silver metal part of the seat looks like just paint which I assume will soon rub/peel off. But I was even more disappointed to find that the green (in our case) body paint not only peeled off into the driveway when we tried to assemble the bike, but also formed paint dust that we found smeared on both of our hands. like my husband's pants and sweatshirt. Because of the toxins in the paint, we decided to put everything back in the box and find another solution. To be clear, the paint had to be out of joint as the surface of the frame itself still looked pristine. But still, if we can assemble the bike and use it without worrying about paint dust, I'm not happy with that. I'm totally open to re-ordering, but I would like to know that our experience was an accident and that the paint used is non-toxic. We'd also like to replace the seat, but the construction seemed solid and we were very embarrassed to send it back.

Pros
  • Works like a regular bike, with handlebars, seat and pedals. Rims: Heavy Duty Silver Steel Rims
Cons
  • Some Shades
