Up to this point I've made my own clear ice using a simple cooler. This method has always produced absolutely clean ice. The problem was that trying to dice the resulting block of ice is messy. I was excited to try the clear ice tray hoping to save myself the hassle of cutting ice. I made sure to follow the directions, using warm water at the bottom of the liner and colder water to fill the dice tray. I've tried this several times with relatively good results. This is certainly more convenient, but the resulting cubes are not entirely clear. The problem is that the thin outer layer of styrofoam doesn't provide enough thermal insulation to prevent side freezing at the end of the freeze cycle, resulting in not much but some gases remaining at the bottom of the cubes. In my opinion, this is still a great option that I will continue to use. It's unbeatable in terms of price.
