My security camera's saved DVR - LOOK AT THE DAMAGED CABLE GOING TO IT

We had a massive lightning strike when a surge went through the Spectrum cable. We also had a severe (induced?) power surge on the temporary external network cable from the temporary IP surveillance cameras in the tree. The network cable has been protected by this Gas Discharge Ethernet Surge Protector before it reaches the DVR. The cable was destroyed up to the spark gap, but NOT further. The DVR was clearly NOT damaged. I've included photos showing the damaged sections of the cable and the blown entry side of the arrester so you can see how bad the surge was. On photos. The gray cable comes from a tree with surveillance cameras and wraps around the base of another tree before passing under an outside staircase. You will find that the impact severed the cable at the base of the tree. Under the stairs, the gray wire went through a plain sleeve to a yellow wire that goes through a window into the utility room. The muff was in a ziplock bag, twisted under the landing. You will find that the impact ripped the clutch in the bag and ripped it off where it was hooked under the platform. He also ripped a cable connector right out of the connector and burned everything down. From the inside of the window, a yellow wire runs to a surge arrester bolted to a well-grounded metal electrical box in the room. This end was burned where it enters the right side of the downcomer. (It didn't pop out of the connector. I manually unplugged it to get a better look at the damage.) The right side of the downcomer is charred and scarred. The white network cables from the left end of the downconductor run about 15 feet to a DVR security camera in another room. *** As far as I can tell, the DVR was NOT damaged. *** I am amazed at how much this arrester held the dash cam and still protected it. I haven't opened the spark gap yet, but I consider it destroyed whatever I can find. $25 well spent! I just ordered more! UPDATE: I opened up the spark gap and it was completely destroyed. A small price to pay for what he did.

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other options
