This collar is held by friction in 2 ball bearings. There is very little friction in these ball joints, and in addition, these balls are less than 1/2 inch in diameter. Also, where these balls screw into the base, some form of friction lock is required to keep them from unscrewing. Therefore, it can only accommodate pocket phones with a camera and definitely no cameras. Don't even think of an SLR camera. It is well made and all parts are metal. If you have the time and skills, you can do something for Macgeaver - that's my current plan!
