We love Melissa and Doug's products and this one is great. The only problem is that the paint on the inside of the holes comes off due to the friction as they move back and forth, but my son loves it. He's obsessed with old school plastic so I figured he'd love that. I was right. He looked surprised when I gave it to him. That's what you want when you give a child a toy. It's colorful and bright. The square ones are great because they cut out and fit together like a puzzle. That's a nice addition. This is not the type of toy you want to get wet as the paint is water based. The age has been changed here. I have seen him for 6 months or more but now he is 2 years old and older. This was a smart change because kids love to put things in their mouths, which is not a good idea with water-based paints. My son loves throwing things around and has handled the abuse well. I've seen other posts about sticks being dangerous and I could see it. However, everything will be fine with the supervision of the children. My son is 2 years old but he can't stand well so I put him on the windowsill in my room so he couldn't fall on it. Based on some questions and feedback I also did a little research on the presence of lead paint. Although lead may be present, the content may not be dangerous. Lead is found everywhere (air, soil, water) but is only dangerous in large quantities. This is from the CDC website. "Only a certified laboratory can accurately test a toy for lead. Although do-it-yourself kits are available, they do not indicate how much lead is present, and their reliability in detecting low levels of lead has not been determined.” So the reviewer who tested for lead at home probably doesn't have one exact test. I have about 1-2 dozen Melissa and Doug toys and they are all excellent quality. Again, the color could perhaps use a bit of work, but this is my son's favorite toy and it's such a minor issue. Even with different paintwork, it will likely wear away within the holes over time.
