Revainrating 4 out of 5

4 year long term review

I first bought the Loft Shredded Memory Foam Adjustable Pillow from Coop Home Goods in December 2016. Sleep. As a child, my mother had an old-fashioned feather pillow that tingled her throat and face. So began my search for a good pillow. I've tried using polyester filled pillows but they didn't properly support my neck and head while I slept. I then tried one of those firm memory foam pillows, but it wasn't big enough or soft enough for a comfortable side sleeper. I would toss and turn throughout the night or wake up with neck and shoulder cramps. So I went to Revain and bought a Coop pillow almost 3 years ago hoping the reviews were right and the high puff and soft crushed memory foam would support my huge head. When I first received the Coop pillow, the pillow was vacuum sealed and had a foam smell that lingered for about 3 days before disappearing. I recommend airing before use. It also had a very high loft and the included breathable pillowcase was excellent. Even after 2.5 years, the pillowcase is still in great condition. The materials are unique and yet very soft, breathable and pleasant to the touch. 5 stars out of 5 for the pillowcase. The first year of using Coop Pillow has made my sleep much better. I slept through the night and had no more neck or shoulder pain. The top of the pillow was high enough and soft enough to make my life on my side like heaven on earth. The filling/filling, the shredded memory foam, had such an interesting feel. It was soft like a polyester pillow, jiggled like a feather pillow, but when squeezed hard enough to support the head and neck, like one of those hard memory foam pillows. The first year I used my Coop pillow was 5 out of 5 stars. In the second year of using the Coop pillow, the attic wasn't as high as it used to be, but it still provided good support for side sleeping. Since the purchase I had to push the pillow about 3 times. I've read about throwing a pillow in the washer or dryer to get the attic back, but I've never tried that. I fluff the pillow again, discarding all of the filling and gently hand tearing it apart before replacing it in the pillowcase that came with it. This is the only real way to bring back the fluffiness; You have to break up the filling in the pillow. I'm not sure if a washer or dryer (by flipping or even spinning) can cause these shredded memory foam bits to come off completely. In my second year of using Coop Pillow, I shook the filling twice and it pretty much went back to its original shape. By the end of the second year, I noticed that the pillow had flattened out and was only half its original size. This was to be expected. Our heads weigh about the size of a bowling ball (I probably have two), and if you put a bowling ball on a Coop pillow for 8 hours every day for over 600 days, flattening is inevitable. I don't expect Coop Pillow to defy gravity and physics. I would rate the second year of my Coop pillow 4 out of 5 stars. By the start of my third year of using the Coop pillow, I noticed that the padding had started to stick together into one giant, hard piece of memory foam. It no longer had that fluffy polyester-style bounce. I could grab the pillow, shake it, and it would quiver like a giant, hard chunk of jelly-like foam. I looked it up by hand about 3 weeks ago and noticed a dark yellowing of the ground foam when it was off-white. It's normal for memory foam to turn yellow, but this seems to be a visible sign that the foam is aging, losing its properties, and is no longer able to function normally. Thus, within a week, the pillow turned from fluffy to hard jelly, and its smoothing was greatly accelerated. You will need to re-whip this pillow every one to two weeks up to the 2.5 year mark. In the last 3 months I haven't slept with the Coop pillow like I did when I first started. Luckily I bought Coop pillows for my parents last year. The attic was too high for my mom so her coop pillow is used as a decorative throw; practically untouched. I traded my flattened coop pillow for their immaculate coop pillow and we are both happy with it. She's finally using her Coop pillow (my old pillow) to sleep. Overall, after 2.5 years of use, I would give the Coop pillow 3.5 out of 5 stars. only the back sleepers will appreciate it in 2 years when it levels off. My only concern is that I might have to buy this pillow every 2 years to get consistent side sleeping support. I just can't imagine doing this every week, it takes me an hour each time to manually break up the whole stuffing. I wonder if shredded memory foam is easily recyclable and good for the environment if I have to throw this pillow away? I have reservations about that. I am currently using my mother's coop pillow and I know that as long as she uses my old coop pillow I will sleep well for the next two years. Recently, as I've become a more conscious consumer, I'm not only thinking about the price, quality, and ease of use of my purchases, but also the durability and recyclability of such products. If it's not recycled, is it at least biodegradable? To conclude this review, let me just say that I love my Coop pillow but will not be buying it again for the following reasons: 1. I sleep on my side and need to buy this pillow every 2 years2. I am concerned that shredded memory foam is not recyclable3. My concern is whether the brand has some sort of product life cycle program and consideration without burying it in landfill (or in developing countries) or is it readily biodegradable. I want to buy a pillow that not only supports side sleeping but also has additional health benefits. Preferably something natural, durable and ethical in terms of sourcing such materials, as well as easily biodegradable at end of life (I'm considering organic, 100% natural, undyed, unbleached linen pillows filled with linen fibers for my next purchase)5. I want to try something different and better. Something that not only benefits me, but is also not negative for people, animals and the environment. In conclusion I would like to say that for the price and what it offers for the first two years it is worth a try. I hope this review helps everyone in their purchasing decision. Thank you Coop Homeware! Update April 2021: After 4 years I have raised my rating from 3 stars to 4 stars. Some users asked me for an update: I finally bought this linen pillow through Etsy from a small business owner in Ukraine, June 2019. Most of the organic linen currently grown and processed comes from Lithuania. It took about 1.5 years and the linen pillow straightened itself out fairly quickly within 6 months. I still love linen pillows for its health benefits, but have decided to use it as the filling for my Coop Home Goods pillow. I also sometimes change its use from a topper to a body pillow. In summary, I haven't found anything better than Coop Home Goods for a side sleeper. I think most companies aren't blown away by pillow technology, but I hope Coop Home Goods continues to explore new materials, recyclability and processes to improve on what they already have. This is my last update on this product, sleep tight and good night everyone ๐Ÿ˜ด
