I bought these because I saw on a blog that they are great for HEMA. They are great for protecting the front of the knee, but do not protect the knees on the side from impact. Since most of the punches are on the side of the knee joint, I made some changes. I added small padded leather wings to dissipate the force of side cuts. So far they're working great. The leather fenders are about .150 inches thick and are fairly stiff, but still flexible in case they rub against each other during the transition. They are attached to the top plate of the kneecap with aluminum rivets and stainless steel washers. The padding is dense closed-cell foam bonded with leather glue.
