This is just a slightly sticky gauze. If you put it on a tool or other commonly used pen, after a day or two it loses its stickiness and starts to get fluffy balls of friction, so you have to change it every few uses. I have a special lightsaber that I use daily for flow and light exercises. I bought this tape hoping to improve grip. When fresh, it feels good, sticky, and comfortable. After a few minutes of use, it will become smooth and fluffy. It's good for adding extra cushioning or thickness, but for durability I'd tape a more traditional hockey tape or tool grip to it. I've also used it on my Wacom stylus and in that application it was pretty good, but in this case I basically just wanted a thicker and softer grip, the nail doesn't matter. Overall, I don't recommend this for anything you use frequently or heavily.
