It can be used for a water bottle or, as I use it, a coffee thermos. This is my second. I bought the first one over a year ago and it is exactly as expected (great). But the neoprene in the places where the loops were sewn started to diverge. I put some glue on it to make it last longer and it seems to be working really well now. That being said, the strap that the aforementioned loops attach to is pretty solid, but the neoprene itself can tear fairly easily given enough stress. So as an upgrade, it might be worth not only attaching the strap material to the neoprene, but also wrapping it around the bottle to reinforce it.
