Mine arrived with a broken lid awaiting a replacement. The crack made it easy to measure the interior space with the lid closed and see how much room there is inside with the lid closed. The lock is very reliable and the body is spacious. to the bottom of the lid about 3.5 inches. With the tray in place, there's 3.5 inches underneath it, except for the center under the handle, where there's more. If your largest item can fit through the rectangular hole under the tray handle, which is about 2 x 5 inches of usable space, then you can fit something about 5.5 inches tall. With no tray installed, you have about 7 inches of height on either end. The central part of the lid is lowered to accommodate a beautiful plum colored folding handle. Don't put any larger items on the bottom and expect the tray to float a bit. There is almost no extra space. I bought this as a gift for a new acupuncture student, along with an acupuncture book, sharps container, reflex hammer, blood pressure set and alcohol container. The 4.5 inch high sharps container does not fit vertically in the tray. Spring. She can use the tray separately.
