The front leg is 4.5 inches wide and the back leg is about 4 inches wide, so probably better for smooth, hard surfaces than a leg, knee, or blanket, although I suspect it can be held between the knees. The silicone coated slide that the device sits on provides some stability in terms of the device not sliding, but if it is not balanced or tilted the device will slide. The rear leg adjusts with small clicks, allowing the front leg (the angle of the unit) to vary from 90 degrees to about 45 degrees. As an experiment, I put my Mac Airbook 13 inch (7/16 inch thick) inside and it fit perfectly, although when upright the rear LED seemed to want to collapse since the Mac is tall (13 inch) and the unit is still short (4 inches), so there is little gravity. Basically this product is ok. It looks beautiful, functional, made of plastic, the leg is not fixed.
