My 2 year old hates getting sand on his skin. It serves its purpose. In the water and on the beach he can run without complaining (until the sand gets to his feet and our beach towel, but what can you do. He just has to grow up a bit when he realizes that beach = sand). As for shoes, there are no problems with wearing them on the beach. I can remove the insoles and twist them all the way out when we get home and yes there are grit that I need to remove but there are never enough of them to bother my son. I didn't wash them for fear they would fall apart or wear out, I let them air dry then turned them right side up and put the insoles back in. because they will be so scratchy in that sense and only used on the beach considering the cost they helped my 2 year old a lot.
