Great camera. on time

I have bought several of these for our shop. They are used by field workers to photograph the progress of work on a construction site. We don't work in harsh environments. Cameras are good for this purpose and we really need to reduce their quality to make the photos a bit smaller for our purposes. As for the point-and-shoot camera, they all did well. It's clearly not a game for my Canon DSLR, but for the money spent it's good value. I think we have 4 or 5 of these S3100s in our fleet and one of the newer S3300s. It seems that in the 4500-5000 frame range the lens motor fails. It looks like it has a broken gearbox. Nikon has already repaired 3 of mine under warranty and the fourth is sitting on my desk waiting to be sent in for repair. This one has a lens motor failure AND the LCD screen is completely white. Not sure if this is an S3100 defect but they were purchased from Revain.com for a period of time in 2011 (Sep, Oct, Nov, Apr 2012) and this week each of them have failed with the same method of failure (Lens motor clicks/sticks/broken gear). Nikon did an excellent job with the repair process. It doesn't even require a phone call. Just fill out the form on the website and send the camera along with a copy of the receipt and you're done. The repairing process was a bit slow, but that's why I have an extra camera. For the price, it's pretty cheap to make. The S3300 (newer model) we have hasn't found this issue yet, but it's much newer than the others (purchased August 2012). Only time will tell I think. I'll definitely steer clear of this old model if you're just trying to save a few bucks. The newer S3300 is available from Revain.com for less, but again, I can't promise it won't have these issues. As said, time will tell.
