I compared them to Polk. The difference in build quality is obvious. They also have less visual impact, as they have a full-coverage smart magnetic grid (Polk has a plastic surround around the edge that's more visible). Yamaha covered the electronics, too, so you don't have to worry about exposure to insulating dust (Polk's electronics are exposed). Yamaha uses gold-plated high-tension spring connections (Polk uses cheap tin-plated pressure inserts). The sound of these Yamahas is clear and crisp with great punchy depth. These speakers are capable of producing quite a bit of bass, which is most noticeable on the floor above. At the top it sounds like a subwoofer when the volume is cranked up. I didn't experience any distortion at high volume. At the same time, the sound quality does not suffer even with a lower background volume. I'm also impressed with how efficient these speakers are. They are much louder than the theatrical ceiling speaker solutions in my last home at the same volume. A few installation tips. When you create a new build, you get a draft in parentheses. Not only do they make drywall cutouts easier, but they also distribute the force of the screws over a larger area of drywall. I feel like it affects the durability of the drywall with all the vibration. Get braces from HTD for $10 each. They are the best and cheapest you will find and they match these Yamahas perfectly. Then fill in with rockwool insulation to limit the transmission of noise to the floor above and smooth out the bass. Overall I'm very happy with the Yamaha. That's a big difference in sound and build quality compared to cheaper speakers. I'm sure there is a difference with B&W and other brands that sell speakers for $300 each. but I didn't want to spend time or money trying to find out.
