Unfortunately not as good as regular cats

I really wanted them to work but unfortunately they have problems. I have been using Neat Cats for over 5 years. I have 2 cats and 3 boxes. The main issue for me is getting rid of the smell. I've never had a problem with the smell of clean cat pads, but with these pads I have always had a strong urine/ammonia odor that starts from the first discharge with a new pad and gets worse over time. At first I thought it might be something my cats are eating but after he proceeded to changing the pad I tried the next cycle with this pad in two boxes and a clean cat in the box which was the most used. Unfortunately, unlike these pads, clean cat pads that had absorbed most of the urine had no odor. Another problem is leaks. I've had the occasional leak from the clean cat pad, but in just a month of use I've had 3 leaks in the litter box and the pad wasn't even remotely saturated. Once I forgot to replace one of the boxes with neat old cat pads so it took a week longer than usual. There was no odor and the pillow didn't leak even though it was very saturated. I think part of the problem with them is how the pad absorbs. The urine does not spread over the pad like clean cat pads do, instead concentrating the urine in a small spot. Clean cat pads appear to expand when saturated. The feel of these pads is definitely a bit different - the filling material seems stiffer/harder than regular cat pads. This might explain the absorption issues I've been experiencing.
