2 ordered, both didn't work on Macbook

I ordered one of these. One of the ports was not working. I went back and got a replacement. When swapping, two ports didn't work. On the second try, none of the ports worked. CF card. Compact flash. Returned. What is strange is that both devices insert micro SD and SD cards upside down. MacBook Pro High Sierra. I don't know if that's the problem, but something is wrong. I have an old Unitek card reader and have never had a problem, knock on wood. I can no longer order it. This Unitek works.
