Last year a blood test on our 16 year old tuxedo cat showed he was on the verge of diabetes; She has also lost weight since her last visit. I do not endorse Hills Science Diet products as their key ingredients are ridiculously priced and therefore a k/d kidney support diet was out of the question. We chose Farmina and the results were really good! Our kitty has gained a full pound and his kidney count (BUN, creatinine etc.) is now back in the normal range. She doesn't need insulin! She also loves to eat it. The food is quite sticky, mind you: if you buy it, its stickiness isn't anything strange or unusual. I recommend this food to anyone whose cat is approaching a diagnosis of diabetes. Try it and see if it helps. This may be because the kidneys are working hard to remove phosphorus from the bloodstream, and low-phosphorus foods give the kidneys a break. This is often enough to get an old or sick cat's kidneys out of harm's way.
