We're not opposed to visual images, but we use Blumenfeld's "How to teach" which cautions against over-reliance on visual aids that affect true literacy and reading fluency. It's a fairly simple graphic that we find useful, and it's not as addictive as those picture suggestion systems that fool parents and kids into thinking they're good at reading until about third grade, when the content ramps up and hints at the Pictures the thought process becomes an obstacle. Children need to see a letter, or a general group of letters, and think of a sound with as few steps between them as possible to be truly fluent and effective at reading.
