The first one only worked to demonstrate depth. Wrote an email to the company and received a new one 2 days later. This works great on my kayak. The displayed depth is accurate and all controls are simple. I got about 4 hours on the first set of batteries and it's still working fine. Good backlight and display. In fact, you can stick the transducer in some water at the bottom of the kayak and it will read the depth with no problem. Not sure how exactly other functions can use it this way. Nicely designed item for the price. UPDATE After 5 months of use I am still very happy with this purchase. I've probably got 30 hours of use and I'm still on my first set of batteries! I mainly used it in the low power mode which only shows depth and thus saves batteries. If you want or need a basic sonar and don't want to spend a lot of money, you will love this article. I bought a universal phone mount to attach to the kayak right between my knees. It is apart from fishing or rowing. Some comments mention that it's not waterproof, just like the instructions for the device. Mine wasn't soaked, but it held up well in light rain and was occasionally slapped on with a paddle. I've used mine almost exclusively in saltwater so that's what it should have done if it was going to die. It still works great, the display is very clear in the bright summer sun. GREAT BLOCK!
