Great versatile lens!

I was very concerned before purchasing this lens for my Canon EOS Rebel T2i 18MP CMOS APS-C DSLR with 3.0" LCD and EF-S 18 -55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens (I just got the body from another seller - couldn't wait for Revain :-) Many of the reviews touched on the very issues that matter most to me: sharpness ( my obsession), AF response time and lens creep. I have to say after over a week of use and hundreds of shots I'm very happy with it. This lens is as good as my previous image stabilized Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4 -5.6 USM SLR lens for EOS DSLRs or my Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM telephoto zoom lens for Canon SLRs Of course it has problems with chromatic aberration, color fringing or wide end distortion - same thing happened with my Canon 17-85, and this Tamron lens is just as good! Incidentally, the highly acclaimed Canon 70-200L is not entirely free of color fringes. The 70-200L lens produces photos with rich and vibrant colors that other Canon or Tamron lenses can't match. But this Tamron lens can do so many other things that the 70-200L lens can't, so go for it! :-) As for the lenses crawling, yes I notice it. I expect it will get worse with use. However, it is a heavy lens with a large zoom range. For what I paid for, I can live with the creep factor instead of paying $$ for a low creep lens design. It takes some getting used to that the zoom rotates in the opposite direction than my other Canon zoom. Lenses. But as a former Nikon DSLR user, I figured I could re-learn how to use Nikon-style zooms if Nikon ever caught my interest again. Overall I'm very happy with this lens - and I'm usually very picky about lens quality - always looking for the perfect lens and never finding it. So I have to say for once that I'm happy with this lens (for now). I love having this all-in-one lens - better than carrying around two or three lenses and definitely better than asking other family members to carry them for me.

Pros
  • Even the elderly can understand
Cons
  • Not everything is as good as it promises
