Although I'm not a gamer, I bought this "gaming" version because I like the extra cache (256MB). The drive has good throughput with a read speed of 250 MB/s and a write speed of 225 MB/s. It used an external case with a USB 3 port (the eSATA port provided slightly higher throughput for both reading and writing). I also like WD's 5-year warranty (as opposed to the standard 2 or 3 years on other drives). Since the 1980's I've primarily used WD drives in my many builds over the years and they've never disappointed me. (I have additional drives that are over 15 years old (lower capacity SATA1 and SATA2 drives) and they all still work well. I would recommend this drive to anyone looking for decent performance at an affordable price. Just one caveat : This drive tends to be hotter than WD Blue drives but still meets manufacturer specs, so if you plan on using this drive in an external enclosure, make sure the enclosure is equipped with a fan, or at least has good cross ventilation Put it in the fully enclosed case with no fan, it will get warm.
