Review on Hurtta Summit Parka Winter Orange by Melanie Gehrke

Revainrating 5 out of 5

I'm still getting my dog through Iowa winters!

My beagle/terrier mix weighs 30 pounds. Her back size was 19 inches so I bought a 20 inch coat. He was too big. I thought it would still work if I tightened the strap, but I ran her for about 5 minutes on my 9 acres and she got so tangled up I literally had to cut her coat off her back. Then I bought the 18" version which fits much better. But the coat has a few downsides that were mentioned by previous reviewers. The belt buckle is sewn backwards and is difficult to fasten. I have to twist the strap to to get the buckle the right way around, it buckles easier but still a very tight cheap plastic buckle. The belt doesn't hold up, it weakens causing the lower abdomen to sag. The back straps are useless - I cut them off. Snow gets under Chest/belly and the coat gets wet. On the other hand, my dog loves this coat and jumps up in it. Everything closes quickly except for the zipper. It keeps her warm when she goes potty outside. This will help us through this terrible cold endure the current midwest situation I don't see how this would work even for walking due to the looseness of the strap I don't think it's safe to use the Letting the dog run free - the probability of getting tangled in something is too great. I think this coat is too expensive. An $80 coat should be perfect and not have all of these issues. Updated 1/6/18. I changed my rating from 2 to 4 stars. This coat has greatly helped my dog survive the extreme cold. The worst was -18 degrees outside with -35 wind when she went out in the morning. I particularly like how the coat covers both her neck and chest area. She just went in and out of the potty without spending much time on the road, but still we made it through that time and she didn't catch a cold. When she entered, she was barely shaking. Without her coat, she would normally be shaking violently in much warmer temperatures than now. So I felt I should raise my rating. The buckle is a real headache and difficult to unbuckle, especially for the elderly. And the strap is not too tight. But the coat's insulation and overall coverage is excellent. Update 12/16/20 Well now my rating is up to 5 stars. My dog survived several winters in this coat. I am so thankful that I have a coat that she enjoys wearing and that keeps her warm. All the little details that bothered me at first don't matter anymore. Most importantly, this coat will keep you warm and dry. The coat is in such good condition that it looks brand new. Now that she's 13, her hair has thinned and she needs more help. I think I'll also buy her an extremely warm Hurtta coat that appears to have a lining that reflects body heat. But this premium parka is still great for most days. Thank you Hurtta for a great coat and helping my dog.
