This was the year I gave up water bottles that promised coolness, ice etc. My rides are often over 2 hours so that wasn't even a guess until then my water might be a little cooler. Today was one of those days. I spent 2.5 hours in the grocery store and it was chilly at times with temperatures reaching 95 degrees Fahrenheit (in the shade). My Garmin watch claimed it was 108F in the sun at one point, but that must have been due to wet bulbs or something. I started with my completely uninsulated water bottle, which got too warm from ice in half an hour and just got hot after that. On the way back I switched to my new Travel dome, which was still rattling with ice. Good luck, I thought as the temperature continued to rise (should have gotten up earlier). My water bottle basket is low to fit a larger bottle. It was easy to hook with finger holes that made it difficult to fall off, and the texture of the bottle was also good and safe. The pop up spout felt stiff because it was hard plastic, apparently I'm spoiled but I was able to sip water without knocking over the bottle because of the straw. When I got home I had drunk all my water but there was still some ice in the bottle. Pros: Good size (24 oz), secure grip (finger holes, textured bottle). bottle for 2 1/2 hours in conditions where normal insulated bike bottles empty in less than an hour) Cons: Hard plastic mouthpiece (not a problem for me, but it's not the bite valve you might be used to) Dark color (this might be a bonus in the winter, but for me in the summer the bottle got hot on the outside. I think that shows how well the insulation works as the water stayed ice cold, but I can't help but imagine it would stay cold longer if there were lighter colors to reflect the sunlight). Miscellaneous? A straw in a hard plastic bottle. It should be good to make sure it always reaches the bottom of the bottle. In my first experience, after filling the bottle with ice and pouring water, the ice would stick together into a hard block and I had a hard time putting the straw in the bottle. And then, just as it happened, the straw came loose from the lid as I twisted it. I use soft silicone straws and they easily turn into an iced drink and when the ice comes off the straw straightens up again. It would be nice if it were the same.
