Out of the box, these speakers aren't impressive at all. You'll be wondering what all the hype is about and why you bought them. Just a few hours of work will change the world. Yes, they need to be hacked, as the Fluance website explains. It will be time well spent. I gave 4 stars for material quality only because of the mounting option provided by Fluance. Note to Fluance: CHANGE THE MOUNT! I have purchased mounting plates with a single keyhole that lines up with the studs for a more secure hold on the wall. I actually used 2 per speaker, one on top and one on the bottom. This assembly is a bit redundant, but I tend to reconfigure it. Aside from the assembly, I like this speaker because the rear panels are mounted to the side panels. For over $100 you just can't beat them. Using MDF instead of plastic eliminates much of the "tinny" sound associated with speakers of this size and cost. They lack low-end, have almost no bass, but who needs or buys surround sound for bass response? They do not work as a network, even with a suitable subwoofer. It's just the environment and they don't justify it. Finally, the size of the room should be considered when purchasing these speakers. They are suitable for small to medium-sized rooms and for small to medium-sized systems. So if you have a small room or office system, these backdrops are for you. Very detailed and generally handles large volumes well. I recommend these speakers partly for the price but more for the quality. Have fun while listening!
