I had an overuse injury to my shin from wearing the wrong shoes for two years. When I land on the outside of my foot, my ankles twist 22%. Choosing the right shoes was of great importance, but he could only do this to control the movements in the ankle. Those ankle cuffs really help. With them I was finally able to run 4 days a week again, over 30 miles a week. While other bushings suggest they can be used in running shoes, the only others I've found are copper bushings. While they are good for other ankle issues, they are the best I have found for improving ankle stability. yes they are closed Yes, they are difficult to reach. This is necessary for their purpose. Applying some 100% aloe vera gel before applying makes things MUCH easier. One thing I noticed is that I have to use the regular insoles that come with the shoes. When I wear special insoles or insoles with extra arch support, my arches start to hurt. Hope that helps!
