Review on MEE Audio Bluetooth Technology Microphone by Ashley Chaney

Revainrating 4 out of 5

It actually includes AAC decoding for better sound quality on iOS devices!

I bought these based on the description that they support AAC, a better Bluetooth output for iOS devices to pair with my Westone AM Pro 30s. I was a bit skeptical as neither Shure nor Westone offer Bluetooth cables. There was no mention of AAC on the packaging of these cables, which was even more concerning, but I was pleasantly surprised after testing and testing it on iMacs and iPhones. On a Mac, you must explicitly enable AAC output. After switching it on I saw that the BTX1 uses AAC while my old Jaybird X2 uses SBC. If you want more details, search Google for "Enable AAC and AptX over Bluetooth on MacOS". On the iPhone, when playing music, I was able to view the debug logs and also verify that it was AAC streaming. If the codec says "2", it's AAC. If it's "0", it's SBC. The image shows the log messages when I was using the BTX1 and Jaybird X2. Again, google "Find what codec is used between an iOS device and Bluetooth headphones" for details. Overall I am very happy with this cable. The audio is significantly better when using AAC (on a Mac, you can toggle between SBC and AAC to hear the difference). Of course, there are other variables that can affect sound quality like DAC, AAC bitrate, etc., but I'm glad I can finally use my more expensive headphones wirelessly without the horrible audio compression commonly found on Bluetooth devices.
