Always use it when descending!
I have both sizes of this auto block and use it for my escapement. I would recommend a 19" sling if you prefer lengthening and a smaller sling if you don't (dismount straight off the harness). The longer loop allows the block to be easily moved away from the body for a smoother release when rapping.
