Review on πŸ”’ KERUI Wireless Entryway Protection Transmitter by Chris Peck

Revainrating 4 out of 5

It's actually a pretty decent doorbell with a motion sensor.

I've been using this device since February 2017 to alert me to visitors approaching my door and also cats needing to go back inside. It's pretty cool and there aren't many options like this one. There are a few caveats, but overall this is a solid product. This is my second purchase. As I said, I bought one in 2017 but also had to replace it in 2021 because my tweaker neighbor thought it was some kind of spy cam and decided to rip it off and pierce it with a steak cutter. But these things happen. Kerui fought like a champ and warned me the whole time he was being stabbed. One thing I noticed about my replacement Kerui sensor is that the electronics have been greatly simplified over the last 4 years. It is important to note that there are no longer two micro switches that allow you to turn the LED on/off and set the alarm timeout to a 5 second or 5 minute delay. This is hardcoded to 5 seconds now and forever. I noticed that the spring used for the antenna isn't actually soldered to either endpoint anymore. In the new design, it only presses against a drop of solder, which is probably why it no longer works for many after a few months. The spring is likely to loosen and loose tension as it hangs upside down and bends away from the solder ball and loses contact. For those whose sensor suddenly stopped working, check if this is your problem. Trying to use batteries in this thing is a joke. You don't even have the option of using AA batteries, but AAA batteries, which are half the capacity, cost the same $$$ at the store. I would give this unit 7 stars out of the box if it took a single 18650 Li-Ion cell. Please take my money! That said, I power both the base and sensor via a micro-USB cable and keep the batteries there in case the power goes out or a junkie neighbor is brandishing a steak knife (yes, that's right). actually happened). Additional thoughts: Like all PIR (passive infrared) sensors, this one is sensitive to direct sunlight and is triggered by passing clouds or glare from passing cars, so you'll have to play around with outdoor placement. My wish list for an improved product includes the following: - It should use 18650 lithium ion cells instead of AAA batteries for better battery life and performance + USB charging. - The DIP switch should return with a delay of 5 minutes. The 5 second ringing is very annoying when chatting with people on your doorstep. - It should have a micro switch to make it less sensitive to sunlight and cause false alarms by only sending a signal to the remote base after 2 or 3 consecutive trips in a short time. In addition to the PIR sensor, add a Doppler microwave radar sensor that can be used together or separately for motion detection. No one is currently selling Doppler transducers, although recently they have become very cheap and can be found in self-winding smart indoor lights. You can work through doors and are not disturbed by sunlight.

Pros
  • Great overall performance
Cons
  • Doubtful
