I have each mounted a Canon 600EX-RT Speedlite on a spare tripod that serves as a makeshift lighting stand. You'll need to keep a short flathead screwdriver in your back pocket to tighten them. The included knurled locking ring is too small in diameter to prevent rocking of items mounted on a cold shoe. However, your gear is going nowhere if you fill your stand with a sandbag and prevent people from tripping over it. It works with a very light umbrella (it just doesn't inspire confidence in terms of stiffness like a branded one). .
