My house is only two years old but the original drain pump has already failed. The builder installed a Victory VIC92260 ¼ HP pump. This is a private label sold exclusively by a local supplier. The built in float didn't work and I caught it working in a dry well. It still had a year of warranty left but I decided it was time to upgrade it. I'm traveling out of town and wanted a more reliable pump and backup battery. After a long research, the choice fell on either Wayne or Zoller. The deciding factors were: Wayne was clearly the more popular house, at least among homeowners; Wayne pumps use a top flow design which should prevent air locks and allow the pumps to be placed on the floor without the use of bricks. Wayne upgraded the 12 volt emergency pump from plastic to metal. The Wayne unit comes pre-assembled in a nice, sturdy and relatively compact package. My sump is 16 inches wide and 21 inches deep and I had no trouble installing it. The primary and secondary pumps are connected together by a 1-½" PVC tee. I taped a 2.5" piece into a Fernco P1056-150 factory connection tee to simplify the installation and to facilitate future maintenance. Then I fitted a new check valve. The Wayne unit comes with a check valve on each pump. You had to do this to ensure the running pump was pushing the water out of the pit and not through another pump However, unless you install your own check valve or ball valve to isolate the water in the standpipe, any future maintenance will become a watery mess. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase. The primary and secondary pumps are powerful and very quiet. Each Sometimes I can hear the old sump pump humming around the house.Now I hardly ever hear it running even when I'm in the basement.The only catch is that the backup pump controller has two beeps . When the controller loses 120VAC, it will beep for 30 seconds. In addition, the controller will emit a brief alarm whenever the 12V auxiliary pump is running. They are loud in the basement, barely audible upstairs. The only thing I would like to improve is the backup pump control and the battery compartment. There are a few problems with Wayne's system, one big and two small. The big problem is that they chose to mount the controller in a standard battery box. This takes up space in the box and limits the capacity of the battery. Wayne requires a 27-FRAME, 75 amp-hour battery, but most pre-built batteries are too large to fit in the tight spaces. The first small issue is that the controller comes pre-wired with ring terminals that require 5/16" screws. Most standard marine batteries do not have 5/16" or M8 connectors. Luckily, the Mighty Max Battery 12V 75Ah SLA, available here at Revain, fits inside the battery box and includes the necessary hardware. Another small issue that most people probably won't care about is the lack of aux pins. Many competitors offer additional contacts on the battery controller for integration with safety systems.
