We ordered this for our grandson's 1st birthday and didn't keep him waiting for the big day. He was so excited when his father unpacked and assembled it, which only took a few minutes. We've only used it at home under adult supervision and it hasn't learned to "drive" itself yet, but we all had a lot of fun with it. The grandson learns to get in and out and to hold the steering wheel while we urge him to drive. In fact, he's not walking yet, but will be pushing this excavator and "walking" with it. He likes to lift the seat to see what's in the trunk underneath. One of two boulders? What else did he put there? Or did someone hide a surprise there? He learned how to press buttons to make various sounds - starting the engine, the rumble of a dump truck, a reverse horn and a horn. There are also volume buttons, but I don't think it's possible to completely turn off the sound without removing the batteries. In fact, scooping up a boulder with a bucket wasn't that easy - we'll see. In the meantime we just put the rock in the bucket and he's happy. The seat is not securely fastened, and small protrusions sometimes slip out of their slots when raising and lowering the seat vigorously. I hope that the chair and this toy will last a long time.
