and it didn't break where the pins on the bottom segment fitted into the holes on the top segment. However, I used zip ties to bridge the gap where it fits and glued the top segment to the shifter. This makes it look almost normal and isn't really attached to anything aside from the bottom of the segment, so it "rotates" at the point where it's attached between my ties and the glued top segment. It's a little hard to explain if you don't have a part to look at, but suffice it to say that while it may not exactly match the OEM part it replaces, with a little ingenuity you can get it working. It may be relevant to other years/models as well, but I used it on a 1989 Chevy Caprice.
