Haven't had it in a very long time so I can't comment on its reliability, only function. It works great for recording and playing VHS and DVD tapes. I particularly like the DVD feature, which remembers where you left off when watching a DVD. When you turn on the device, it starts right where you put the DVD. Great for 3 and 4 hour movies that take 2 (or 3) days to watch. The function indicators for a DVD or VCR are tiny rectangles on the device and are the same color. I wish they could just make different colored bulbs, or 1 LED for VCR and 2 for DVD or something. Sure, you can tell what feature is activated when the TV is on, but if you just want to eject a disc or cassette, you'll have to stand directly in front of the player to see what feature you have. The remote control is a big problem with this nice offering. It's only 6 inches long and 2 inches wide and the buttons are tiny and the pressure on the buttons is microscopic. And you can see that the labels for the DVD features are (barely) okay, but the VHS features have used a dark mustard color print which is awful to see. You need to have a flashlight handy, which (along with the tiny buttons) kinda takes away from that "Braille" way of getting used to your remote control. Luckily I had a larger remote control from my other Toshiba DVD player. It's off-white (as opposed to black, like new) and has large easy-to-read labels, but I'll have to use a new one for the VCR anyway. So why should a tiny remote control do the job? I do not know. Also, on the remote they put the REW and FWD buttons right in between the SKIP FWD and BACK buttons so you try to fast forward or rewind a DVD and end up skipping the whole scene forward or backward! It hurts a lot! Also, they've moved the SLOW button up and to the right, away from the other play buttons, near the OPEN/CLOSE button so there's more potential fun. Keep in mind that it doesn't have a tuner, so you can't hook it up with a coax cable, you'll have to hook it up directly to your cable box or satellite box. You'll need one of those 3-wire cables with two audio and one video cables, which by the way free riders don't ship with the device, so be sure to get them. Well, otherwise it works well, inexpensive and beautiful.
