Review on πŸ’¨ Crucial P1 1TB 3D NAND NVMe PCIe Internal SSD - CT1000P1SSD8, with lightning-fast speeds up to 2000MB/s by Patrick Hamman

Excessive heat during writes - DO NOT USE WITHOUT HEAT SINKS AND AIRFLOW (fans)

I have a Crucial P1 1TB 3D NAND NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD - CT1000P1SSD8 installed in a Dell G5 laptop. I didn't run any benchmarks, only data copies, Steam installs, etc. Performance seems good in this regard, but during a large game install it reaches up to 110 degrees Celsius and maintains that temperature! Exposing the drive outdoors is not enough. I ordered a radiator, but a lot of heat is generated here. I'm not sure if there is enough airflow inside the laptop to dissipate it. I found that a can of Aircloth was useful for cooling the chip to sub-critical temperatures while systems were shutting down and shutting down. The temperature jumped again for a few minutes after a restart, but stabilized. There may be some internal TRIM or self-management operations that took some time after copying as Windows did not report any disk activity. This drive might be suitable for a desktop computer with a large heatsink, but there should be warnings for laptop use. According to the data sheet for this drive, the operating temperature is between 0Β°C and 70Β°C, I'm not sure if this can be expected from a laptop under any load. EDIT: Heatsink installed and temps are much better. Changed from 1 to 3 stars. The performance is excellent; I get 1432 MB/s read and write in AJA system test and the temperature didn't get that high. At the same time, a short test (32 GB) with a radiator brings the temperature of sensor 5 to 70 degrees. I almost got it 4 stars but that's the high end of the operating range and it's creeping in, a longer post will likely take it higher. This would probably be fine on a desktop. I was lucky that there was enough room to push the cooler in (I mean COMPRESSION). Without them, I would expect the M.2 to burn through quickly. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SPACE FOR A RADIATOR WHEN INSTALLING IN A LAPTOP! UTF8&psc=1 This worked for me. Not everyone needs to do large copy operations, but if you need a 1TB SSD, chances are you'll give it a try one day. This will work, but you need to understand its limitations.

Pros
  • Beautiful
Cons
  • Can be damaged
