I read all the negative reviews before purchasing. I hesitated, but for the (price) after the discount and free shipping, I had to lose something. The hard drive installed with no problems. BIOS / OS recognized the hard drive immediately. The drive comes with the latest firmware which I need to add. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I expected the worst. I have a Crudball PII with an EIDE hard drive with 17ms access time and low transfer speed. We're talking about PIO4, that's a few days before ATA! I was expecting to have to shoot at 8x or so. Not this case. This drive ran at 16x with no problems. No coasters! And the buffer was consistently at 90%+. No sign of a valley bottom. I don't know what to do with people who have problems. Interestingly, this is not user error!?!?!?! I encountered a problem with the included Adaptec program. Blank discs in the drive were not recognized. Fortunately, Easy CD Creator includes an instant update tool that works over the Internet. Once I downloaded the latest version of Easy CD Creator, all the errors went away. For free software with a (price) disk I can endure a 5 minute download to get things working. As far as drive noise goes, it's no louder than any other 32x+ I've come across. (As a technician with 12+ years of experience I've seen quite a bit of junk!) Of course you can buy other brands that are a bit quieter, but I don't think (price range) justifies a 6dB difference in noise. This disc really shines when it comes to DAE. If you're planning on ripping CDs to make your own mixes or whatever, this drive flies! All of the negative reviews seem to stem from people just not reading the instructions or having no idea how the CD-ROM works with other system components. The processor has nothing to do with it and the main memory is in the same boat. Just make sure you have DMA enabled (for both your CDRW and your hard drive) and that you have the fastest hard drive as the master on your controller and are using the correct cables. (ATA66 drives, etc. require special 80-wire cables. Using any cable will revert the drive to the old IDE baud rates.) As long as everything is set up correctly, you shouldn't have any problems. If you have two controllers, place the CDRW on controller 2 as the master. These rules apply to all ATAPI CDRWs (translated as non-SCSI). Great ride, I recommend it to everyone. Please make sure you know how to install and patch IDE devices from Adaptec. Putting in an extra 10 minutes of effort will save you a lot of money and get great results from this drive. Quick Note: When CD-ROMs/RWs are rated for speed, the company uses the maximum possible speed to advertise the drive. Most (99.99999%) manufacturers do this. A lot of people come home and get frustrated when they run the test program and it tells them their AVERAGE transfer of their drive is 20x or something like that. 40x is only available in the outermost areas of the disc. This is because the laser traverses more of the surface than the interior of the disc in one revolution. Don't lose shape. That's how things work and how disc manufacturers advertise their discs.
