1.5 star deduction for intolerance to wool and shavings

My 17 year old horse started rubbing his hocks when standing up from a prone position. As everyone knows, the ankle is one of the most difficult areas to defend. This ankle protector is very well designed as it consists of two parts for mobility and multiple Velcro straps for security. The first strap is attached to the shield next to the horse's hock, then the second strap is tightened and wedged between the two straps. The inside is made of synthetic fleece which offers good cushioning but the downside is that the bed material penetrates and sticks to it. I use a brush to shake off most of the wool, but there are smaller bits and splinters that grow into the wool and need to be picked up by hand. You definitely don't want a piece of wood shavings rubbing against your horse's hock. Because my horse has to wear a shield every night, that extra morning chore is frustrating. I suggest the company look for a different liner that's easy to clean but still offers the soft cushioning you need. This product is not cheap and the manufacturer claims it should last at least 3 months(?), which doesn't make sense to me. Time will tell, but the shield looks a lot stronger. I am deducting 1 star for the hair/chips issue (which should actually be a 1.5 star deduction UPDATE: It has been a month of daily use. My horse likes to sleep on his right side and the right hock has external fraying developed and tearing which is now wearing out.I bedded the stable with a large quantity of large fluffy shavings on a matt floor. The hock guard protected my horse's hock very effectively and the chafing that developed is now almost over Completely however if this ankle brace can only be used for a month or two I will have to look into an alternative that will either last longer or be cheaper for a permanent replacement.

Pros

Cons
  • Slightly wrinkled
