My old magnifier was a folding magnifier I got in college. This design is no longer available, but what I liked was that it was small and light. It wasn't the biggest increase, but having something in my pocket to carry was a huge benefit. This new one with light inside is much heavier and bulkier. I won't be carrying it in my bag which means it will be in fewer places. I've used it at the jeweler's but didn't bring it because I didn't want the hassle. Now I admit that big and heavy is relative. It probably only weighs 8 ounces but is about the size of a baseball and I can't help but than to compare it with my old one. On the other hand, the light is very pleasant. The glass is very transparent. The magnification performance is impressive. All in all I would only recommend this magnifier if you have it on your desk.
