Genuine GE MWF filters are $49.99 as of January 2019. The manufacturer requires a filter change every 6 months, or more frequently if you exceed a 300 gallon capacity. The filters are rated NSF 42 and NSF 53. The packaging states that the filter reduces drugs and lead; However, the filter is neither NSF 401 (Pharma) nor NSF 372 (Lead) certified. I checked the National Science Foundation website to see where the filters are made. Unsure of the NSF results I received, I emailed the NSF and they responded to me in less than 24 hours. According to NSF, the filter components are manufactured in Tianjin, China. The filter label states that the filter is "Made in the USA with World Sourced Components". I have checked the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) website and there is no minimum level of detail to support the "Made in the USA with components sourced worldwide" claim. This filter is not made in the USA. According to Wikipedia, GE Appliances is a home appliance company headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky. It belongs to the Chinese conglomerate Haier. Armed with the knowledge that GE Appliances is a Chinese company and that GE filters are made in China and some assembled in the US, the cost of a $49.99 "Genuine GE Filter" is very low in my opinion. AQUACREST and Waterdrop Plus filters, also made in China, are available from parent company Ecolife Technologies; and they are better and cheaper. These filters are NSF 401, 53, 42, 372 certified and are direct replacements for MWR refrigerators. These filters have the same 6 month flow rate of 300 gallons and 0.5 gpm. Revain's current price is $13 each. In addition to the excellent NSF ratings, these filters are ISO 9001, WRAS and WQA certified, which is not the case with genuine GE filters. In the future, I will buy better filters from other manufacturers, drink cleaner water, and save $74 every year. .
