Not sure what other people were expecting when ordering this. I was expecting a cheap plastic fan which I got. Works great for me. Yes, it is a hard surface device. This means you won't be using it while sitting on the couch or anything like that. This is intended for more desktop usage. People have commented on the weakness. Again not sure what you were expecting for less than $5? No, it doesn't hold Malestrom, but with your laptop sitting on it and it standing on your desk, it should work just fine. I've been riding for 3 months and no problems so far. It seems to cool well. I have an old laptop that kept getting hot when playing games or watching videos for a long time. This allows me to do both for much longer before problems arise. Did this fix the problem? No, but that's also partly what I want from my dated, dented old laptop. Without it, I would have to dispose of the laptop or not do what I want. It was a $5 temporary measure to help me survive. I feel like this would have been the best decision in every way if I hadn't waited so long and received one of these sooner. Then that would probably fix my problems now. If you're at your desk with your laptop most of the time, this is a great $5 solution. If you need more than this basic function, you need to spend more than the basics.
