I received mittens with separate index finger and thumb. I was worried because I was skiing during arctic blows, which caused the temperature at the foot of the mountain to reach 13 degrees and the cold at the foot was about 1 degree. Some said they weren't made for the cold but they work GREAT. Mt fingers didn't freeze at all. I had the liner (separately) but the thumb and forefinger articulation made my friends jealous of their full mitten. They held up great throughout the 4 day ski adventure.
