We have an Omron instant infrared thermometer in our ear. Bought this unit as a replacement as plastic cups or lens caps are becoming harder to find and more expensive. Not to mention that the old device had three lithium coin cells. I'm pleasantly surprised that this unit came with alkaline batteries and not the cheap charcoal filter I used to get for free. I've considered buying a slightly more expensive non-contact thermometer, but it only gives 10 readings, while this unit gives 32 readings! I'm glad I chose this very reasonably priced instrument. It has three measurement modes: body, surface and space. I checked the surface temperature on the A/C thermostat and it was within a degree of the air temperature reading from the digital thermostat. The measured surface temperature at the return duct was 81.5 degrees Fahrenheit and the temperature at the vent was 67.5 degrees Fahrenheit. Between 10 and 15 degrees is what you would expect a difference to be. I can recommend the device for home use.
